How to boost your success with a web design process

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in this industry – everyone feels it from time to time. But you can spot a successful web designer quickly by the trail of satisfied clients in their wake and the fact that they rarely seem frazzled and stressed. If you want to be one of these designers (for your sanity and your reputation) then we’ll let you in on another secret: you need to follow a well-defined web design process.

The folks at New Design Group came up with a meticulous infographic showing each step of the web design process from start to finish. By following this chart during your projects, you’ll be able to efficiently produce what your clients want, when they want it. Happy clients will recommend you to others and your stress levels will plummet.

The brief

Teasing out the clearest brief possible from the client is fundamental. You need to fully understand the target market if you want to design web pages that will appeal to them. You need to be clear about how much content is going to appear on each page, so that you can present it in the best possible way to hammer home key messages.

Don’t use up all of your creative juices just yet! You need to plan. Make sure you understand the desired website structure and navigation so that you can provide the final customer with a great online experience. Consider how the layouts of different pages will all complement one another. Create initial concepts and share them with the client.

Once the preferred concept has been chosen, only then should you start work on the visual elements of the web page templates. Select colors and typography to reflect the company brand. Decide which images to use to create a website with a strong impact. Then present your prototype templates.

Development, launch and maintenance

As the approved templates enter the development phase and beyond, your design role won’t necessarily be over: web programmers may need modified templates to fit the functionalities of the website. And post-launch your skills may be called upon to make design updates in response to ongoing website optimization.
